Dentures for Your Lifestyle

When you only have a few remaining healthy teeth (or none at all), our dentists may suggest fitting you for dentures. Dentures give you back your smile, the ability to eat your favourite foods and increase your confidence by replacing your natural teeth and gums. You want your dentures to be flexible and fit seamlessly; your mouth is constantly changing, so you will need to come back to Admiral House for occasional adjustments or relining.

Types of Dentures

Based on an examination of your mouth, our dentists determine if you need partial or complete dentures.

Partial dentures are removable prostheses that fit onto your nearby natural teeth. It may be as few as one artificial tooth or several. Partial dentures are used when your surrounding natural teeth are too weak to support a bridge, or if many teeth are missing. Partials are held in place by small clasps that fit onto nearby teeth, which are simple to remove for cleaning and at night.

Complete dentures, as the name suggests, are a full set of artificial teeth. We fit you for complete dentures when all of your natural teeth are missing. Unlike partials, which connect to other teeth, complete dentures are held in place by suction. We take the time to show you how to care for your dentures so you wear them correctly and give them the care that makes them last many years.

Complete dentures come in two sub-types:

  • Immediate dentures are ready before your remaining natural teeth are removed. We remove teeth that are unhealthy or counterproductive to your oral health. These dentures are inserted right away, giving you teeth throughout the healing process. Your bones and gums may shift or shrink during healing so we will need to see you again to reline your dentures.
  • Conventional dentures are made and inserted into your mouth after your gums have time to heal from any extractions. Placing dentures after healing ensures the perfect fit right away.

Dentures at Admiral House

Before fitting patients for dentures, we start with an exam of your remaining natural teeth for signs of decay or infection, check for gum disease, and do an oral cancer check. We will tell you what we see and will proceed with denture treatment with your approval.

In some cases, we will talk to you about removing any unhealthy teeth in your mouth so we can place complete dentures. We do not take this step lightly; any time we suggest a treatment, our recommendations are founded on best practices and what is the best overall oral health solution for our patients. To prepare for dentures, we measure your jaws and take an impression of your teeth; we use this mold to custom-make your dentures. New dentures can take a bit of time to get used to and may be sore at first. If you are concerned about how they feel in your mouth, please let us know and we will be happy to meet with you about it.

Caring for Your Dentures

Even though these are artificial teeth, they still require daily cleaning to avoid problems such as plaque and tartar buildup, stains, bad breath, and gum issues. To clean, remove the dentures from your mouth and rinse them under tap water. While they are out, use a denture brush or toothbrush with denture cleaner or mild soap and gently brush all surfaces of the denture (including denture clasps, if applicable). Rinse again and re-insert into your mouth.

Any time your dentures are out, use that time to also clean and massage your gums. Do not sleep in your dentures; instead, soak them in warm (not hot) water overnight with a dental cleanser. It is important to keep your dentures in water when you are not using them to prevent them from drying out or distorting. If you notice any cracks in your dentures bring them back to us so we can have a look.

Denture Materials

In general, dentures are made of acrylic resin or porcelain.

  • Acrylic resin is a durable material with strong adhesive properties and easy to adjust the position of the teeth. This material is lighter than porcelain and less expensive as well, but they do wear a bit faster.
  • Porcelain is a glass-like ceramic material that looks and feels similar to natural teeth. The enamel can be colour-matched closely to your natural teeth for a seamless appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a set of dentures cost in the UK?

The price of your dentures in Berkhamsted can vary drastically depending on the quality of them, as well as the sort of dentures you’re opting for. Typically, a full set of dentures will start from around £2,400, but again, this can vary from practice to practice.

Here at Admiral House, we understand how much of an investment a full smile can be, which is why have made our prices completely accessible, here. You can budget better for your upcoming treatments, whether it’s a plastic denture you’re after or a more advanced type.

How long do you have to wait to get dentures after teeth are removed?

It can take several months for your gums to fully heal and recover following tooth extraction, and you may be given immediate dentures during this time so that you have teeth in place whilst your gums heal. After between 3-6 months, your gums should be fully healed, at which point we will check if your dentures need relining (if your gums have shrunk or moved) and your conventional dentures will be fitted.

How painful is getting dentures?

The process of getting dentures in Berkhamsted can vary depending on the health of your existing teeth, and whether any extraction will be required. Of course, having teeth removed can be painful after the event for a couple of weeks, but your gums will be fully numbed beforehand to ensure that when you’re having the teeth removed, you feel no sort of pain.

When it comes to getting the actual dentures fitted, this can be uncomfortable, especially if you’ve never had dentures of any kind before. However, once you become accustomed to the way that they feel, you should eventually no longer be able to notice the difference.

If you’ve recently had dentures fitted and are struggling with pain or discomfort, be sure to get in touch with our team.

Will my face change with dentures?

If left unattended, tooth loss can affect how your face looks, and can sometimes lead to a loss of structure and an appearance of sunken cheeks. This is largely due to muscle wastage, causing the skin to eventually sag and wrinkle.

Having dentures fitted as soon as you’ve lost a tooth or teeth, can help to minimise the effect it has on your outward appearance and can help to prevent sagging and wrinkling to a degree.
