Complete dentures, as the name suggests, are a full set of artificial teeth. We fit you for complete dentures when all of your natural teeth are missing. Unlike partials, which connect to other teeth, complete dentures are held in place by suction. Complete dentures come in two sub-types:
- Immediate dentures are ready before your remaining natural teeth are removed. We remove teeth that are unhealthy or counterproductive to your oral health. Caring for Your Dentures
Even though these are artificial teeth, they still require daily cleaning to avoid problems such as plaque and tartar buildup, stains, bad breath, and gum issues. To clean, remove the dentures from your mouth and rinse them under tap water. While they are out, use a denture brush or toothbrush with denture cleaner or mild soap and gently brush all surfaces of the denture (including denture clasps, if applicable). Rinse again and re-insert into your mouth.
Any time your dentures are out, use that time to also clean and massage your gums. Do not sleep in your dentures; instead, soak them in warm (not hot) water overnight with a dental cleanser. It is important to keep your dentures in water when you are not using them to prevent them from drying out or distorting. How long do you have to wait to get dentures after teeth are removed?
It can take several months for your gums to fully heal and recover following tooth extraction, and you may be given immediate dentures during this time so that you have teeth in place whilst your gums heal. After between 3-6 months, your gums should be fully healed, at which point we will check if your dentures need relining (if your gums have shrunk or moved) and your conventional dentures will be fitted.
